This Saturday!!!!!!!

COME COME COME COME COME!!!!
Here it is guys, THE LAST CRAFT FAIR THIS SEASON! Be there or be square! It's your last chance to get some sweet baby clothes, hand made books, and not to mention Scrapple wares! Come support Leah and I and finally finish your holiday shopping. Okay kids, here's all the info:
THE PUNK ROCK FLEA MARKET - HOLIDAY EDITION
(100+ tables of vendors selling old records, clothes, art, music, food, junk, bicycles, stereo equipment, instruments, automobiles, tools, posters, furniture, computers, skateboards and lots of other stuff ! All proceeds goto making sure that all ages shows remain a reality at the first unitarian church !)

It's that time again for the bi-annual (twice a year) PUNK ROCK FLEA MARKET. R5's most popular reoccurring event/show/whatever by far. We continually have over 2000 visitors and 100 tables of old records, clothes, art, music, food, junk, bicycles, stereo equipment, instruments, automobiles, tools, posters, furniture, computers, skateboards and lots of other stuff this past June. It's all going down at The STARLIGHT BALLROOM located at 9th and Spring Garden Sts - a big spacious venue - giving them ability to host over 100 vendors in one single room.
.
All proceeds raised will goto the purchase of necessary equipment and supplies to ensure that all ages shows continue to remain a reality at The First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia - mainly an annual payment for their liability insurance policy. Do not let the "name of the event" lead you to believe that it's just punk records, clothes etc. - it's a full on flea market with everything from furniture, to laptops / computers , to stereo equipment, to handmade apparel, to vegan treats, information from various non profit groups, book stores, artists selling their work, bicycles & skateboards and whatever else they can fit onto the ballroom floor at The Starlight Ballroom.

In addition to the normal flea market stuff there will also be a full bar and food service kitchen to make the day go by a little faster.

Paper Jam!

Hey all! Come out this Friday, Sept. 19th, for Paper Jam at My House Gallery.

Here's the blurb Alex wrote about the show:
MY HOUSE GALLERY PRESENTS PAPER JAM

The 8 1/2 by 11 inch piece of paper has become a fixture in our contemporary culture. This standard image confronts us every day. Containing advertisement, files, faxes, business contracts, photo copies, and a myriad of information, we take in the information, often over looking the spatial context within which it is contained. What if our standard paper size was drastically different? What if it was half of or doubled in size? How would this change our perception and understanding of information? Paper Jam puts the 8 1/2 by 11 piece of paper under the hand of the artist to allow them to expand or contract their artistic understanding of the parameters of space presented.

OPENING FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 19TH 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Fun will be had by all! There's over 50 artist from around the states involved, including me! So come show some love. I'll look for you there.

AND THEN! Remember this Saturday at Clark Park! Leah and I kick off the tour by starting our first of many craft fairs this holiday season! It's a blockbuster weekend! See you soon.

Long time no blog.

Sorry for the major delay here guys on my part in the blogging world, but I'm coming back full force here with some recent images of books I've repaired at the HSP! Wooo!@!@!! Okay so now a quick lesson in repairing a book. This is how the books came to me.....

Sad I know, but not to fear! We can put it back together!! Yay. So first step, do any paper mending and dry cleaning to the pages. This means cleaning dirt off the paper and mending any tears in the pages themselves. Second step! Hindge and Guard all the signatures! This is putting the individual folios (folded pages) back together and attaching any loose pages so we can sew it.... which is step 3! Sew the book back together, in this case using the herringbone stitch. Woo! Okay now step 4, attach the spine and covers, and voila! You have a book again! Now just take into account this took me about 3 months work. Ha. Okay well here's the finished product!

Fun right! Okay kids until next time... which I promise will be sooner than later.

Julianna.

p.s. I forgot to mention these books belonged to the Chew Family (check the HSP blog!) and were a cricket journal, and college notebook!

Nerdy post part II.

Here's just a little quip on everyone's favorite compare and contrast tool, the Venn Diagram. I'm not exactly sure why, but I felt compelled to research this great tool. Actually it's probably the best invention ever and opens the gates to the most hilarious of comparison's. It was invented by John Venn in 1881 to show all possible relations between mathematical and logical sets, duh. There's even a stained glass window dedicated to Mr. Venn at his alma mater, Caius College in Cambridge. Pretty cool huh? If I knew how to work in stain glass I'd probably only make venn diagrams. Oh well enough talk and check out some images, I mean really what would a good post be without awesome venn diagrams.

Moleskin art.

I'm sure many of you know of the famed Moleskin journals, you may even own one (i do, love it), however have you heard of Detour? Detour (the moleskin city notebook experience) is a Moleskin project that is non profit supporting the Lettera27 group. Lettera27 is a non profit organization promoting literacy and the right to read, bring education to places it's needed. (pretty cool...) Anyway, Detour shows in different cities around the world showcasing artist's works in Moleskin sketch books. These artist come up with some awesome things. Here have a look!

more chew family stuff

Yesterday at the HSP, we stumbled across this great drawing book from the later 1800's. It was chock full of great little illustrations of Samuel Chew's family and friends. Needless to say I got pretty excited about it. So much that I blogged about it on the Chew Family Papers blog. click here to see and read more about it!

Anyway, here's my favorite image. Totally reminded me that I need to start working with my cameos again! Here's hoping Samuel's work spurs me on to do some more!

Chew Family Papers!

So as many of you know I've been working at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. What you might not know is that I've been working primarily with the Chew Family papers. Now you might ask yourself, "What in the world are the Chew Family papers?" and I would respond! check this link!!! I am very proud to say that the HSP (primarily Tara O'Brien, Cathleen Miller, and Natalie Whitted) have made a blog spot dedicated to the ongoing and repairs of the Chew Family papers. Complete with exciting Chew stories, history, and images of the great stuff they saved. Hopefully by tonight I'll post some images of some of the stuff I've been working on! Keep tuned kids!

calling all artists!

Hey All,

Like I mentioned before Rue Couture (the place in Collingswood, NJ that I've been doing work for) is trying to get artists to come hang work for their shop! Vince and Sandy are a great couple who are really into promoting the arts. In Collingswood they have a "Second Saturday" it's pretty much the same thing as Philly's "First Friday" just obviously on a different appointed day. That being said Rue Couture is planning on having events at the shop to promote they're goods and local artists! If you're interested in showing some work e-mail me! I told them I'd help them find some great stuff. They are looking for wall work, whether it be prints, photographs, graphic design, paintings, or hanging sculptures. Sorry guys no free standing pieces, it is a boutique after all. Looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks again.

Second Post!

Wow! It only took me 3 months!

Well, there is a ton of new things in the life of Julianna Lose...too many to name.
Excitingly, I have started an internship with The HSP*, particularly with Tara O'Brien* in the conservation lab. This means I get to look at cool old books while making boxes to house them along with a many other exciting things. So far so good, and really looking forward to learning more! Hopefully, if I remember to actually keep up on this thing I will "blog" or write more soon about all the interesting old stuff I'm going to get to encounter.

On another note, I'm taking part in a show on February 15th! Well, that's the opening actually; which if your interested is from 5:30-8:30. It is with Art Glut gallery at 8th and Porter. Alex Gartelmann, a fellow artist and sculptor, is taking on an amazing feet by organizing and curating the show all by himself! I'm pretty excited to be a part of it, along with someother 40 odd some artist, and to really experience all the work! Other exciting artists that will be featured include: Leah Mackin, Michael Ryan, Phuong Pham, Fernando Ramos, and many other talented people. Come show us all some love at the opening!

Well kids, thats all for tonight! Til we meet again, or I actually stay on top of my stuff and post again. Adios.
